5 Stay-In Date Night Ideas

Whether it’s a first date or you’re going out with your “studsband,” spending time together is generally something that costs money. And if you’re spending a lot of time together, it can end up costing a lot of money. Between restaurant dinners, movie tickets, events, shows, and everything else, it can seem like you have to spend money in order to have fun. Things don’t have to be this way, though. There are lots of options for things you can do at home, spending little to no money. Next time you and your main thang want to have a fun night, do some of these cheaper options guaranteed to be a good time.

1. Have a s'mores night

S’mores are the ultimate fun dessert. They’re playful, sweet, and just a little messy. Roasting marshmallows together has built-in moments for conversation and a 10/10 cute factor. This s'mores maker from Amazon is under $20 and so perfect for date night. Grab some marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers from the dollar store and have yourself a s’more… or 10!

2. Create a makeshift home theater

Going to the movie theater every time there’s a new release can really add up to a lot of money, especially with popcorn, snacks, drinks, and such. They’ll all end up on Netflix or Hulu or Amazon Prime Video sometime soon, so might as well wait! Put all the couch cushions on the floor and push them together. Grab a couple of cheap snacks from Wal-Mart, throw down some blankets, and turn the lights down low. Pick a great queer-directed or queer-written movie and let it play across the whole wall with an inexpensive LED projector or HD projector that you can use over and over again.

3. Make vision boards together

Instead of going out and spending money, stay in and think about what goals you have for your money. Discuss future plans, destinations, and ventures to soon be explored. Take some time to bounce ideas off your boo and help each other form a concrete vision. If you’re just starting to date each other, it’s also a good way to gain insight into how compatible the two of you may be. Grab some cheap poster boards, save some old magazines, dig up a pair of scissors, find a glue stick, and get to work!

4. Do an at-home spa day

Treat yourself! Both of you! Take some time to relax and unwind together, relieving the stressors of everyday queer life. Put on some bathrobes or really comfy boxers and settle in for a night of pampering. Get a cutesy in-home spa basket and warm up the water for a nice bubble bath. Add on a jade facial roller or do some deep pore cleansing, each for under $10. For the ultimate spa effect, get a peel-off mask for your hands or feet, too.

5. Have a homemade dessert night

Who really knows what’s in Sonic’s ice cream? Or McDonald’s for that matter. Unless you want to splurge on some high-quality ice cream, it’s going to cost you a pretty penny. Instead, get a frozen dessert maker you can use time and time again. Make a healthier, better alternative that’s more fun to make at home. Get some fresh fruit plus any added toppings and make a cute sundae bar for two.

All in all, date night doesn’t have to be expensive. Invest in some things that can be used repeatedly for a lot of romantic and fun evenings. Write down these ideas and more, plus some going out options, on some popsicle sticks, put them in a jar, and randomly choose one to decide plans. Spend time with your boo, enjoy life, and dedicate a night to the connection you have with them. Make sure you always take the time to really get to know someone new or to keep the spark going with the woman who has been by your side for years.
